Rhythm of the Words Professional Growth Services

We offer professional interdisciplinary learning approaches that improve student outcomes.  Our program embeds researched literacy practices with occupational therapy and modalities to help practitioners master the knowledge and skills needed for delivering evidence-based literacy interventions and for being competent school collaborators.

One-Day Course

Because literacy impacts the ability of individuals and families to live productive, independent lives, achievement gaps make a broad negative impact on society.  This course engages practitioners with authentic children's musical play that improve sensory integration, perceptual motor, cognitive, language/communication, and social-emotional learning.  Our resources target literacy acquisition.  We provide a tool-kit to enhance student participation in meaningful childhood occupations!

Presentations and Testimonials

Webinar Overview: The Rhythm of the Words interactive webinar provides access to an evidence-based conceptual framework and multimedia curriculum to help occupational therapy practitioners utilize children's songs and games to enhance student engagement in the occupations of literacy. Participants will examine current legislated mandates along with the AOTA literacy stance for school-based OT practitioners. An understanding of the relationship between the developmental continua of children's musical play and the sensory integration/perceptual motor underpinnings of language-literacy acquisition will be promoted. If an occupational therapist's toolkit includes a rich repertoire of strategies for using multicultural children's music and movement in combination with other interventions, then practitioners may be better equipped to enhance student performance outcomes.  For more information about this webinar, please see Filomena's review of Dr. Knight-Wilkins' two-hour Therapro seminar on this topic that she presented at Therapro headquarters on April 13th. Some YouTube clips of the seminar can be found here.

Webinar Review: Our 2nd Therapro Webinar on May 28th was well attended by OTs and parents from across the US. Rhythm of the Words: Integrating Multicultural Songs & Games with Occupational Therapy to Improve Literacy was presented by Cleopatra Knight-Wilkins, OTD, MED, OTR/L. Dr. Knight-Wilkins provided access to an evidence-based conceptual framework and multimedia curriculum to help occupational therapy practitioners utilize children's songs and games to enhance student engagement in the occupations of literacy. She demonstrated that if an occupational therapist's toolkit includes a repertoire of strategies for using multicultural children's music and movement in combination with other interventions, then s/he may be better equipped to enhance student performance outcomes.

We'd like to share some comments from attendees:
